As part of the war effort, the members of the Aylmer Travel Club knitted socks and collected other items for inclusion in "Comfort Boxes" which were distributed to soldiers at the Front by the Canadian Field Comforts Commission. A cloth label was attached to each pair bearing the name and address of Miss. E. Lewis, Secretary Treasurer of the club. The letters in this collection were sent to Miss Lewis to acknowledge these gifts. Letters often included brief vignettes describing time in the trenches and other first hand glimpses into the life of a soldier in the Great War.
